Regulators in several countries have issued public warnings about MT-2 products. In June 2022, Ireland’s Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) stated that Melanotan 2 is not authorised by the HPRA or any medicines regulator to treat any condition, that it is not an authorised medicine in any form, and that no supporting safety data are available. The HPRA named injectable powders, nasal sprays and drops among the products it had seen.
In Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has warned against tanning products containing Melanotan II. It states that MT-2 is a prescription-only medicine there, is not approved as a tanning agent, and that no products containing it are on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. The TGA has also issued infringement notices to an individual for alleged supply.
