Glutathione has the structure γ-Glu-Cys-Gly, molecular formula C10H17N3O6S, molecular weight 307.3 g/mol and CAS number 70-18-8. That is three residues, and the first bond is unusual: cysteine attaches to the side-chain carboxyl of glutamate, a gamma linkage, rather than to its main-chain carboxyl.
That small size changes how it is made. A long research peptide such as MOTS-c is assembled one residue at a time by solid-phase synthesis, then purified at small scale. Glutathione, by contrast, is produced on an industrial scale. A review in Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology describes direct fermentation from sugar, with the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida utilis in industrial use, alongside an enzymatic route from the three amino acids. Therefore, the cost of each milligram is a small fraction of a long synthetic peptide’s, and vials are sized in hundreds of milligrams.
Per Milligram Versus Per Molecule
A milligram of glutathione also holds far more molecules than a milligram of a long peptide. At 307.3 g/mol, 1 mg is about 3.25 micromoles. At 2174.6 g/mol, 1 mg of MOTS-c is about 0.46 micromoles, roughly seven times fewer. So comparing a glutathione price per mg with a peptide price per mg tells you little. The Thiol: What Purity Means for Glutathione
